JOB DESCRIPTION

Accountant

JOB SUMMARY

The major responsibility is to report on the financial status of the Organisation and to assess the financial performance against financial objectives. Other purposes include establishing and enforcing policies and procedures. Directing activities of accounting staff and providing support to the Group Financial Comptroller.

 

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare monthly financial reports to guide the Board and Management
  • Ensure that reliable financial information is collated for Branch and Department reporting.
  • Identify causes of significant variances between actual and budgeted results.
  • Prepare financial reports of the Credit Union to meet international financial reporting standards.
  • Report monthly on the operations of the Accounts Department on the success of initiatives that serve to meet the organization’s strategic objectives.
  • Assist in the preparation of the organisation’s annual budget from Branch/Department submissions
  • Manage the day to day affairs of the Accounts Department, assigning work to subordinate staff, resolving issues that impact on the performance and ensuring that adequate systems are in place for the efficient functioning of the department.
  • Authorise journal entries and cheque payments, verify and approve accounting data that is entered to the computer system.
  • Ensure all accounts are reconciled, reviewed and authorised monthly.
  • Assess the performance of subordinate staff and provide formal semi annual appraisals

 

Other DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend and participate in meetings of management as required.
  • Participate in the development of Products and Services
  • Participate in the analysing of investment opportunities with recommendations.
  • Occasionally present financial accounting information to staff
  • Make recommendations to improve the Finance and Accounting Department efficiency and skill levels.
  • Approve employee leave
  • Make decisions on the execution of Departmental activity
  • Make recommendations to Group Financial Comptroller on matters to improve efficiency and resolve accounting issues.
  • Participate in special projects and initiatives.
  • Ensure the efficient performance of periodic financial audits

 

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:

  • ACCA Accredited or CIMA equivalent qualifications in a related field.
  • At least seven (7) years experience at accounting at a Supervisory Level and preferably in the financial sector.

 

COMPETENCIES:

  • Comprehensive knowledge and working experience with accounting software; developing spreadsheets and analysing data.
  • Good oral and writing skills.
  • Ability to meet monthly deadlines.
  • Ability to focus on and analyse large amounts of data.
  • Ability to make sound decision making.
  • Ability to comprehend and evaluate issues.
  • Ability to multitask and oversee various activities simultaneously.
