POSITION DESCRIPTION

1. JOB TITLE

DIALYSIS TECHNICIAN

4. ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIP

The Dialysis Technician will report to the Registered Nurse at the Hospital or the Head Nurse at the County.

5. NATURE & SCOPE

The Dialysis Technician is formally trained in an approved dialysis technician programme, and is certified to perform hemodialysis at the highest levels. He/She is also required to adhere to hospital policies and protocols.

6. SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

The Dialysis Technician:

  •   Sets up and operates haemodialysis machine to provide dialysis treatment for patients with kidney failure: attaches dialyzer and tubing to machine to assemble for use.
  •   Mixes dialysate according to formula.
  •   Primes dialyzer with saline or heparinized solution to prepare machine for use.
  •   Transports patient to dialysis room and positions patient on lounge chair at haemodialysis machine.
  •   Takes and records patient’s predialysis and post dialysis weight.
  •   Explains dialysis procedure and operation of haemodialysis machine to patient before treatment to allay

    anxieties.

  •   Cleans area of access using antiseptic solution.
  •   Connects haemodialysis machine to access inpatient’s forearm or catheter site to start blood circulating

    through dialyzer.

  •   Inspects equipment settings, including pressures, conductivity and temperature to ensure conformance

    with safety standards.

  •   Starts blood flow pump at prescribed rate.
  •   Inspects venous and arterial pressures as registered on equipment to ensure that pressures are within

    established limits.

  •   Calculate fluid removal or replacement to be achieved during dialysis procedure.
  •   Monitors patients for adverse reaction and haemodialysis machine for malfunction.
  •   Take pre and post haemodialysis laboratory tests and be able to make an initial interpretation of the

    results in order to bring any abnormal results to the attention of the registered nurse.

  •   Read and understand Doctor’s/Physician’s prescription and nurse’s orders to carry out orders as

    prescribed.

  •   Administration of medication per patient as directed by the Nurse in charge.
  •   Any other related duty.

7. KEY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  •   Strong interpersonal skills.
  •   Effective writing and oral communication skills.
  •   Be able to haemodialyze ESRD patients via cannulation of patients with fistulas and grafts, and via

    dialysis of patients with catheters. The technician must be able to be familiar with the tubing, connectors, fitting and the hand tools required for the process.

8. MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  •   Certificate/Diploma as a Dialysis Technician from an approved school of study.
  •   Five (5) CXC/GCE O’Level passes inclusive of English Language and Mathematics.
  •   A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in allied/medical /health field.
