4. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP

The Wound Care Specialist shall report to the County Medical Officer of Health

5. NATURE & SCOPE

The Wound Care Specialist will be responsible for the management of the day-to-day operations of the Wound Care Unit of the Eastern Regional Health Authority. The officer will work collaboratively with the County Medical Officer of Health to develop strategies for the management of the Wound Care Service within the Eastern Region.

6. SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

The Wound Care Specialist:

  •   Assesses the condition of a patient’s acute or chronic wound based on his or her medical history, listens to the patient’s concerns and performs physical examinations
  •   Diagnoses the underlying aetiology of chronic wounds through physical exams, x rays, medical laboratory tests, and other methods
  •   Provides treatment for acute and chronic wounds
  •   Gives advice and instruction on wound care and on general wellness techniques
  •   Refers patients to other physicians or specialists if they detect larger health problems, such as diabetes
  •   Reads journals and attend conferences to keep up with advances in wound care
  •   Establishes and delivers intra-region strategies for wound care management throughout the county

    collaborating with the primary care givers and Ministry of Health if and when the need arises.

  •   Performs any other duties as deemed necessary by the approved Authority.

7. KEY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  •   Knowledge of the underlying aetiology of chronic wounds
  •   Ability to examine patients, diagnose disease and to administer necessary treatment of acute and chronic

    wounds

  •   Knowledge of principles and practices of preventative medicine
  •   Ability to gain confidence and co-operation of patients, and to establish and maintain effective working

    relationships with other employees and the public

8. MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  •   Qualification as a Wound Care Specialist which is recognized qualification for a professional Wound Care Specialist in the country of issue for eg. Certfiied Wound Specialist by the American Board of Wound Management
  •   Training as a Pedorthist would be an asset
  •   Any equivalent combination of experience and training
